Exactech Hip Replacement

National Exactech Hip Replacement Attorneys

Were You Affected by the Exactech Recall? Call (916) 520-6639!

Certain hip replacements manufactured by Exactech, Inc. have been recalled due to very early wear. The issue lies with some polyethylene components that cause the hip implants to wear out much earlier than the expected 30 year life of a prosthetic hip. In many cases, the hips have failed in as little as 5 years. Exactech has also recalled certain knee and ankle replacements over the same issue.

If you have been affected by the Exactech recall you may qualify for compensation. Exactech is covering out-of-pocket expenses related to its defective hip, knee, and ankle implants. However, you may be eligible for additional compensation through a civil lawsuit. This may include pain and suffering, postoperative care, and lost wages on top of out-of-pocket expenses.

Our experienced legal team at Kershaw Talley Barlow is currently reviewing Exactech recall lawsuits. We have handled hundreds of defective hip implant cases nationwide, guiding our clients down the path to full compensation for their losses/damages. Let us fight for you!

Defective Exactech Hip Implant Injuries

Common injuries from defective Exactech hip implants include:

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Stiffness
  • Grinding
  • Joint instability
  • Limited mobility
  • Inability to bear weight
  • Tissue damage
  • Bone loss, or osteolysis
  • Device or component loosening

Revision surgery will likely be needed to replace the defective implant. In some cases, only parts of the implant will need to be replaced. While this may be a “simple fix” from a medical standpoint, it hardly seems simple from the patient’s point of view. Surgery can be highly stressful, cost great sums of money, and require time off work to heal. The physical and emotional pain and suffering is often difficult to bear.

No one should have to go through additional surgery because of corporate negligence. We’re here to hold Exactech accountable for putting you through unnecessary hardship.

About the Exactech Recall

In July 2021, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) implemented a class II recall on Exactech’s Connexion GXL acetabular liner, a plastic hip liner. These hip liners are inserted into the artificial hip socket to interface with the femoral head. In simpler terms, they line the space between the cup and the ball.

Unfortunately, the defective Connexion GXL acetabular liner has been used in a variety of Exactech hip replacements since 2004. That means patients across the nation have been affected.

Two studies sparked the FDA recall: one by the University of Florida College of Medicine Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation, and another by surgeons in New York at the Hospital for Special Surgery. Both studies found that the plastic of which the hip liner is made, irradiated ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), is prone to wear out and fail much earlier than expected.. The New York study set the average timeline at about 5 years. In the studie, the authors noted that the premature failure of the plastic liners can cause painful Osteolysis, or bone loss/degeneration.

Exactech Extends Recall to Knee and Ankle Implants

Exactech did not only use polyethylene to make hip liners; it also used this material in various knee and ankle implants. It wasn’t long before the hip replacement recall was broadened to include certain Exactech knee and ankle replacement components.

The issues are the same: osteolysis, early wear, and cracking or loosening of the component. Just like with the defective hips, plastic debris was discovered to break off the liners and cause problems for patients.

One major issue with the defective Exactech hip liners is that when patients went to the doctor just 5 years after surgery with complaints of hip pain, prior to the recall, doctors were unlikely to think that the plastic hip liner already needed to be replaced since the liners are designed to last 20 to 30 years. Many doctors thought the issues their patients were experiencing had to be rooted in something else, such as pulled muscles or other health conditions. As a result, many patients were left with worn hip liners, and the resulting pain, for years.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Do I Know if I Have a Recalled Hip?

With so many different hip implants impacted by the Exactech recall, it can be difficult to know whether you have been affected. Patients can check the product ID stickers against the FDA recall announcement. Another option is to call your surgeon and request an operative report. Your surgeon may also be able to tell you whether your hip implant was recalled.

If you are having trouble finding out whether your hip implant is defective, especially if you have suffered a common defective hip implant injury, feel free to contact our national Exactech hip replacement attorneys online for help.

Who Is Going to Pay for the Revision Surgery?

Exactech is offering to cover copays for revision surgery, but not much else.

At Kershaw Talley Barlow, our lawyers recognize that surgery impacts every aspect of your life, often resulting in pain and suffering and a host of financial losses beyond the cost of surgery. We are committed to maximizing our clients’ compensation, so as to help them get back to their lives as quickly as possible after surgery. Often, the best route to compensation is through a civil lawsuit.

Should I File a Claim with Exactech?

If you file a claim with Exactech, you will be entitled to limited compensation, such as out-of-pocket expenses and copays. While this is a great option for some patients, most patients will be entitled to much more compensation through a civil lawsuit against Exactech.

Exactech will not compensate anyone who files a claim through its internal process for:

  • Pain and suffering
  • Inconvenience
  • Possible complications
  • Permanent injuries that can lead to future health issues

The only way to recover these damages is through an Exactech lawsuit.

What Is Broadspire and What Do They Do?

Broadspire was hired by Exactech to administer claims for people affected by its recalls.

If your case involves out-of-pocket expenses, we may be able to take care of this as part of our services—and at no extra charge. In most cases, we can secure a check from Broadspire within a month or less.

Who Is Eligible to File an Exactech Lawsuit?

Anyone who has been negatively affected by a defective Exactech hip liner or other hip, knee, or ankle replacement component may have the right to file an Exactech lawsuit. The oldest defective Exactech products were manufactured in 2004.

If you or a loved one has struggled because of a joint replacement since then, don’t wait to call our Exactech hip replacement attorneys at (916) 520-6639.
