9 Vehicle Crash in Sacramento Leaves 8 Injured
A multiple vehicle crash occurred late Tuesday morning near the Highway 50 connection on I-80 in West Sacramento. California Highway Patrol (CHP) says nine vehicles, eight cars and one big rig, were involved in the crash. A total of eight people were injured in the crash. Four suffered minor injuries and three others walked away with bumps and bruises. One person was taken to the hospital with major injuries and is expected to live. We wish everyone involved a quick recovery.
Witnesses told CHP the big rig seemingly appeared from nowhere and plowed into all of the vehicles. CHP says the big rig driver was conscious at the time and the cause of the crash is still uncertain.
According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, 1,981 fatalities and injuries were reported in 2012 as a result of traffic accidents in the city of Sacramento.
Potential Legal Claims
Often in a vehicle collision, the at-fault party or parties are held liable for injuries or losses occurring as a result of negligence. When the at-fault party is a semi-trailer truck, or big rig, the driver and truck company may both be liable for injuries and fatalities. Truckers should have the utmost caution when driving such an over sized vehicle. If the driver is not at fault, the cause of the crash could stem from a malfunction of the big rig. There are many unanswered questions involving the crash. Was the driver distracted? Was he under the influence of alcohol? Was there a failure in the brakes? The driver gave a statement to CHP which is currently not released to the public.
If the driver or trucking company is found at-fault, the injured victims can seek compensation for damages including hospitalization, continuing medical expenses, rehabilitation, pain and suffering, permanent injury, lost wages and emotional distress. Victims are advised to contact an experienced personal injury lawyer who will focus on their investigation and protect their legal rights and interests.
