New Year's Eve Safety Tips

New Year's Eve Safety Tips

Over 10,000 people are killed in drunk driving accidents every year. During the holidays, like New Year’s Eve, the risk of sharing the road with drunk drivers is high. According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), “New Year’s Day is the most dangerous day of the year for drunk driving on our nation’s roadways.” Together, we can ring in the New Year safely. Follow these New Year’s Eve Safety Tips:

  • Don’t drink and drive. Don’t drink and bike or walk either. There is no excuse to hurt yourself or others.
  • If you plan on drinking, assign a sober, designated driver ahead of time to ensure you and your passengers travel safely.
  • Prior to heading out, save the number of a local cab company, download a ride-sharing app (e.g. Uber, Lyft), or hire a shuttle service to transport you to and from your event, or arrange a hotel stay for you and your friends on the evening of the event, so no one drives home impaired.
  • Don’t let someone drive who has been drinking, and don’t get in a car if the driver is impaired.
  • If you are driving, be alert behind the wheel, ensure you and your passengers use seat belts, avoid distractions and drive cautiously.

Be Alert

  • Be mindful of your surroundings and how others are behaving. Avoid individuals who seem out of control and may cause harm.

Safety in Numbers

  • The buddy system is appropriate for any age. If you are celebrating New Year’s out on the town, stick with your friends and family. Travel in a group at bars, clubs, or restaurants. People will be drinking, and therefore, the city is more dangerous.

  • Proceed with caution if you are lighting your fireworks. According to the California State Fireworks Law, “safe and sane fireworks” means any fireworks that do not come within the definition of “dangerous fireworks” or “exempt fireworks”. Private citizens without a state license are prohibited from possessing, distributing or discharging “dangerous” fireworks. Citizens can check out the Cal Fire Fireworks in California- National Association of Rocketry Handbook for more information on fireworks.
